Brown-hooded Kingfisher / Halcyon albiventris

Many thanks to Paul van Slooten (pvs) for the correct ID.

My first posting I would like to dedicate to my husband Loot. He showed me how to love all of creation and everything involved with nature. He taught me about the different animals, birds, insects, fishes, flowers, trees, and much more. This list can go on and on. He has a broad general knowledge on about any subject and does not mind to share what he knows with others. If he is not sure about a certain subject or does not know enough about it he will look it up and come back to you with an answer. He is the near perfect tutor. I am sure many of you have learned to know him that way.

Upon seeing this Brown-hooded Kingfisher for the first time in our garden, I could not believe my eyes. It was a wonder I did not break a leg while running back into the house to call my mother in law to come and have a look at this beautiful bird so close by. At that stage I thought it was a once off moment, but soon realised that it must have a nest somewhere close to our house, as I have since seen it on a regular basis. Like the day I took this shot. I was walking in the garden, camera in the hand, looking for an opportunity to take a shot of anything that would just sit still for a few seconds. As I looked up this little guy was sitting on the wall as if he paid rent to be there, only about 2 meters away from me. This bird was not bothered by me in the least and in fact it looked as if it was waiting for me to take its picture. I think it was just pure luck that this photo came out at all. I was trembling so much with excitement and had an adrenaline rush like never before. At that moment I realised that the photographic bug has sunken its fangs deeply into me
.

Avian Jewels of the Waterways

Kingfishers are among the most brilliantly coloured of all birds, and many have strident voices and dramatic courtship displays. Most species have some blue plumage, and many have red bills. Some are confiding and adapt well to man's alteration of natural habitats, and can even be seen in suburban gardens.

There are more than 86 kingfisher species throughout the world, with the greatest diversity in South-East Asia, where some rare species are confined to just one tiny island. Africa has 18 species, ten of which occur in Southern and Eastern Africa.

Kingfishers perch in an upright stance, are large-headed, short-necked and have long, stout bills. They belong to the order Coraciiformes and are related to bee-eaters and rollers. In flight, kingfishers are speedy and direct, rarely flying above tree level. Despite their name, not all kingfishers feed on fish - many are carnivorous (feeding on vertebrates such as reptiles, rodents, and birds) or insectivorous (feeding on insects and other invertebrates), and some rarely come near water.

Six species of African kingfishers that do not fish feed on insects, arachnids and small vertebrates that are mostly captured after a dive onto dry land. Several of these species are nevertheless often seen near water, as they also breed in sandbanks. They are the Pygmy Kingfisher, Woodland Kingfisher, African Mangrove Kingfisher, Brown-hooded Kingfisher, Grey-hooded Kingfisher and the Striped Kingfisher.

One of the smallest, but best known of the non-aquatic woodland-dwelling kingfishers is the Brown-hooded Kingfisher. A bird that adopted well to suburbia and occurs in gardens and parks in many southern and eastern towns throughout South Africa and is also fairly often seen on the highveld. It feeds primarily on insects (especially grasshoppers, beetles and larvae), and lizards, but they also eat small snakes, small rodents and birds (the size of waxbills and sunbirds). They take most prey on the ground, sometimes in the air, with 80% capture success.

It is a burrow nester excavated in a bank. The tunnel is seldom more than 1-2m above ground level. They lay 2 to 5 white eggs at a time. The chicks are born after about 2 weeks, and are fed by both parents. Source

Distinguished from other similar red-billed kingfishers by its brownish head streaked with black, the rufous patches on the sides of the breast and the well-streaked flanks. It differs from the Striped Kingfisher by its all-red (not black upper and red lower) bill and by the lack of white in the upper- or underwing. Taken from the book: Sasol Birds of Southern Africa - By Ian Sinclair and Phil Hockey.

I hope you enjoy looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Miss Piggy

Very welcome to TrekNature. I hope you will enjoy this site even more now that you finally have become a full member. I really hope that you will grow with love, skill, and knowledge of photography and that your photography will grow to full bloom with the aid and assistance of all the wonderful members on this site.

Apart from the fact that you took a beautiful shot of this kingfisher I think I should reserve my critique and leave it up to the other members since I did the PP for you and obviously might be biased.

Very well done with your first posting and TFS.
Best regards
Hagar (the horrible)

Hi Anna,

Hello Anna
Ha, ha, ha...and then there were two.
Welcome as a member to the site. I am sure you arleady know your way around the place so it shouldn't take you long to settle in and enjoy it completely. You surprised us with a lovely photo of this kingfisher. For one who have not been taking photos yourself since only a couple of weeks ago you actually gave us a great image. Nice sharp focus and plenty of spectacular colours. Very well done indeed for your first posting and I am sure if this is the standard by which you start we are in for a number of lovely surprises in the future.

Hello Anna,
Very beautiful and sharp detailed photo of this Brownhooded Kingfisher. And, of course, welcome to TN. I've visited your country twice: the nature is so impressive, varied and beautiful. There's a lot more to photograph there. I wait for the next one.
Regards,
Peter

Welcome Miss Piggy (you told me you got a good sense of humor and I'm far away after all)
I missed my chance to meet you last year in October as we were both operating in Kruger. I suppose we were too busy photographing.
Very good first image. I'm even a bit jealous 'cause I couldn't get one Kingfisher in 3 weeks time. Missed a few opportunities:-).
Good compo, exposure. Beautiful Kingfisher.
Well done, Anna (can I call you Anna?:-)

Hello Anna

Hulle wil mos altyd alles in 'n kompetiese laat ontaard. Baie welkom by Trek Nature. Jy is baie meer waagsaam as ek.

Groete
Rehanna

Hello Anna and a pleasure to meet you as well!
Knowing your dear husband, i'm sure that your input in this community with be superb and you'll have a splendid collaboration with a lot of members :)

This is a terrific first photo to begin you adventure here with!
Kingfishers are very attractive birds and even if they were photographed a lot of times, it's always a pleasure to watch a well taken shot such as this one!
I very much like the details you managed to get here, due to the impressive close-up level.
It's colors are lovely and definitely enhanced by the great light in that spot. I find the patches of sunlight on its head great and they definitely set it apart from the other kingfisher photos.
Very good DOF chosen for such a subject, too and very a complete note about the bird, too (loot has thought you well :))

Bravo and thanks for sharing!
Horia

Hello Anna,

Hernn

hi Anna,
and thanks for visit my little kingfisher.
I find your pictures verry imppresive, good focused but a little little bit to tight in crop, creating a cage or box effect

anyway a good collection, still going...
L

Wow, this is a stunning photo that I had not noticed before. Such good clarity and composition. As you mentioned in your critique of my photo, this bird is not as pretty as the Woodland Kingfisher but you certainly have done it maximum justice.
TFS. Mike

Hi Anna, Your composition of this brightly coloured kingfisher is very good. I like the tight crop and lots of details, including the eye which seems so important in bird/animal photos. TFS. Murray
PS you don't look like Miss Piggy to me.

Hello Anna

Beautiful photo.
I have tried and failed miserably, many many times to get a half decent photo of the beautiful kingfishers I have seen in India.
This photo is very clean and clear and can help give inspiration to amteurs such as myself.
I have been lugging my camera about with me on my tiger travels for a few years now, but I never get that perfect photo, so I am always looking to improve.
I will always keep trying and maybe one day I will get somewhere near such a great result as your photo here.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Regards

Roy

Hi Anna,

First of all, WELCOME ON TN. I hope you will enjoy this site.

It's very nice that you dedicated this beautiful bird to LOOT. I think he is one of the best photographers and critique writers on TN (my opinion). The whole composition is sharp. The detail in the feathers is amazing. Nice colours and lighting. The composition is ok. POV,DOF and BG are also good. Interesting notes. Have a nice weekend and TFS BOB

Hi Anna
This Brown-hooded Kingfisher is so colourful. I just love how close you were able to get and he seems to staring right into your camera. The bright green background makes for a nice contrast against his feathers. Excellent note.
TFS Janice
Thanks for the nice critique on my winter scene. Winter can be so beautiful if it's not to cold and the wind is calm. The snow can sparkle like diamonds some days when the sun is shining.

Hi Anna, this is a beautiful capture!!! Well done!
Cheers, Lus.

Hello Anna
Wonderful first post to TN. I know how exciting it is to see an amazing thing and be able to capture and share it. Very informative note - it appears that you are continuing in Loot's fine tradition.

Greg

Dear Anna,
Every life has a calling and its answered when the right moment comes. And sometimes our lives have not just one calling, there might quiet a number of them...and I guess this was one of them for you. And going back to your first posting after looking at and critiquing many of your more recent posts, am delighted to say that your presence has enriched this site. You have focussed not just on posting but also on bringing in elements of note writing and producing critical and constructive evaluation at your end. I think this is where members have been able to connect with you despite you being here for a shorter period compared to many others.I congratulate and appreciate your achievement and look forward to your presence in the times to come.

Kingfishers are one of most seen birds but they also come in such diverse and intriguing kinds that they are so wide spread across the world. Through this debut posting you present one which i have not seen here in India. The sharpness, colours and clarity is brilliant and the lighting used in perfect manner. There is a quizzical expression i notice on its face, maybe thinking "what is the lady upto?" ...and So fate had it that the kingfisher sat close enough for you to get a great capture and thus started your journey in TN.

So wish you good luck and good cheer and i say life is good and there is so much more to do...

Warm regards
P.S: i love that recent profile shot you got there...it is just so cute...
tomorrow

Bonjour,
Une belle nettet, un oeil vif, un arrire-plan qui met bien l'oiseau en vidence... bref un charmant clich.
Bonne journe.

Nice picture of the king fischer. Its beak is really big compared to the one that exists in sweden.
Godd technical quality and nice colors, but i do feel that i could use som more air to the left. It feels a little tight.

Hello Anna,
I thought I would go back to see what your first posted image was. I am impressed with the beauty of this Brown-hooded Kingfisher and also with the superb detail you managed to capture. This particular fellow looks like he was sitting right next to you and didn't mind a bit that you were taking his picture. Your work has always been outstanding and I truly enjoy viewing your wonderful images.
