*****************************

Small White is a small- to mid-sized butterfly species of the Yellows-and-Whites family Pieridae, with a wingspan of 35-50 mm. It is also commonly known as the Small Cabbage White. The names "Cabbage Butterfly" and "Cabbage White" can also refer to the Large White (Pieris brassicae).

The upperside ground colour of the male is white. Forewing with a black apex and two black marks in the postdiscal area (the lower is very faint and hardly noticable). On the hindwing there is only a single, small black costal spot. The forewing underside ground colour is white with a yellowish apex and two small, black postdiscal spots. Hindwing underside ground colour is light yellow with a light suffusion of black scales. The female is similar to the male but the black markings on the upperside are larger and more pronounced. The yellow colour and light suffusion of black scales are much more intense in winter and early spring broods, while the black markings on the upperside are much fainter and are sometimes barely visible.

It is widespread across Europe, North Africa and Asia and has also been accidentally introduced to North America, Australia and New Zealand where they have become pests on cultivated cabbages and other mustard family crops.. It flies throughout the year in successive, overlapping generations. All the immature stages have been found during the winter months. The mild climate and plethora of larval host-plants appear to encourage this species to breed throughout the winter. The larval host-plants are Sinapis alba (White Mustard) and various other plants of the Cruciferaceae family. In the summer and autumn it has been observed ovipositing on Capparis spinosa (Caper).

It is seen in every type of habitat from sea level to the highest points of its distribution areas. Often collects in large numbers near irrigated areas where its larval host-plants thrive throughout the year.

Hi Bareatom,
Wonderful composition with a mating pair, everything, even the antennae, are on the rightest place on the pic. Great sharpness. DoF is shallow a bit, but with this kind of background, this is what to do to separate the subject. Superb photo - although I'm not 100% satisfied with the colors: there's a soft cyan filter on the pic, as it seems like. This is what I tried to change a bit in my WS. Otherwise everything else is marvellous on the image by my opinion.
Tfs, friendly regards, Lszl

Would fav'ing this get me an A in your class? Although I love butterflies, especially this Love Boat series, I'm not sure about some of the advanced classes you teach. They are way above my head...but must certainly attract other students...as did Mehmet do for others like.

You speak perfect English...which is almost universal now. I wonder why you have made a switch? I am certain you must have had a definite purpose...pray tell me kind kind Prof.

Merhaba sevgili arkadaşım,
Another treasure from your impressive archives! Excellent 3D effect with the soft texture of the Small White very well presented. Typical background of a compact camera, but not disturbing in this case because quite contrasting with the subject. İyi bir hafta sonu dileklerimle,
Cathy

hello Bayram
beautiful coloured picture with great sharpness and good pose with nice light
a super shot again from you Bayram
greeting lou

arkadaşım Bayram,
Sorry to look delayed at your beautiful couple (Internet has hiccups.)

Volkan expresses the opinion of the majority of TN members, that you should publish these series!!

You mention in your interesting notes they being a pest (I mean Kk Beyaz Melek ) - and I notice on your photo damage to the leaves; do they actually eat them or is it their caterpillars?

Your technically perfect work allows us to see a multitude of details, including the fine frill on the edge of the wings.

Perfect presentation!
Anybody saying different should read the story of the fox and the sour grapes!

Have a nice evening
Kendine iyi bak!
Gzel bir yeni hafta
dileklerimle arkadaşım.
Ingrid

Merhabab Bayram
this loving couple is so well highlighted against the dark BG, it looks like two lamps in the darkness, excellent sharp details on the butterflies and the leaf,
the white subjects are well placed in this image
Have a good night
