Captured on Iceland, 20D @ 200mm.
describes any of three auk species (or alcids) in the bird genus Fratercula (Latin: little brother probably a reference to their black and white plumage, which resembles monastic robes) with a brightly colored beak in the breeding season. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil.

All three puffin species have large bills. They shed the colourful outer parts of their bills after the breeding season, leaving a smaller and duller beak. Their short wings are adapted for swimming with a flying technique under water. In the air, they beat their wings rapidly (up to 100 times per minute) in swift flight, often flying low over the ocean's surface.

Hi Rolf

Well done on a very nice shot. Nicely composed with good POV and nicely saturated colour. Very good camera work. :-)

nice shot. beautiful bird. tfs

Hello Rolf!
Yesterday I went to the Bronx ZOO. There were some puffins there, unfortunately behind the glass. They're very funny and for some reason friendly looking birds with their thick bills. In your picture I like the tight framing, your POV and the bird's pose with its head turned in the right direction for the shot. Congratulations,
Mark

Hi Rolf,
Nice shot.

Hi Rolf
Nice bird, nice photo. In my opinion you tried to sharpen it too much, and we can see a white line in the top outline of the bird. You can avoid that creating a new layer (in Photoshop), sharpening it, and before merging it, erase carefully the top layer parts that are not so natural, revealing the original.
Hope you understand my comment as positive.
Well done, anyway.
Regards
Guilherme

Hi Rolf, great shot of the Puffin. You have great compostion here with very good depth of field to cut out the background. He is very sharp so the detail shows up very well, and great colour.

Thanks, John

Hi Rolf,
you are a lucky guy to have had the opportunity to get yourself a photo of a bird that I would love to see for real. You have good detail in your puffin, however the shade in its face hurts the look somewhat.TFS. Bob
