The Ostrich!

Did You Know?

The Ostrich is the largest living bird, and the fastest running bird. It also holds the record for laying the largest egg of all birds. An ostrich's egg is about 40 times the size of a chicken's egg.

Characteristics of Flightless Birds
- They have reduced wings. Being small, they are easily concealed among the long, hairy and shaggy body feathers

- Unlike flying birds, the feathers of these flightless birds are not applied by oil glands. As a result, their feathers are not smooth and flat, but are stiff.

- The feet, with a reduced number of toes, are adapted for running. Of the two toes on the Ostrich's foot, one is much reduced in size, and is so structured to obtain a top running speed of 70km/hr.

Joke time:

A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich behind him. The waitress asks for their orders. The man says, "A hamburger, fries, and a coke," and turns to the ostrich, "What's yours?"

"I'll have the same," says the ostrich. A short time later the waitress returns with the order.
"That will be $9.40 please," and the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact change for payment.
The next day, the man and the ostrich come again and the man says, "A hamburger, fries, and a coke."
The ostrich says, "I'll have the same."
Again the man reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change. This becomes routine until, the two enter again. "The usual?" asks the waitress.
"No, this is Friday night, so I will have a steak, baked potato, and salad, says he man "Same," says the ostrich.
Shortly the waitress brings the order and says, "That will be $32.62."
Once again the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and places it on the table. The waitress can't hold back her curiosity any longer.
"Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact change out of your pocket every time?"
"Well," says the man, "several years ago I was cleaning the attic and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it a Genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would always be there."
"That's brilliant!" says the waitress... "Most people would wish for a million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!"
"That's right. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there," says the man.

The waitress asks, "But, sir, what's with the ostrich?"
The man sighs, pauses, and answers, "My second wish was for a tall chick with long legs who agrees with everything I say."

Hi Steph,So sweet and very clear foto,I really liked it,well done..Joke is hilarious too..

Hi Stephanie,
Nice pov and well presented with this extreme close up. Love reading your joke.

Your collection of bird portraits is pretty impressive, Steph - and this is no exception.

Great detail in his hairy wee had and good sharpness on the eye.

Original angle to the shot as well - congrats on a great capture!

I presume you were in spot metering mode here, GPO.
Apparently, the focus on the eye is spot on, but the beak and the halo of hair around the face are considerably blurred.
The opulence of your bird park is such a blessing. You can pick and choose at will.
Lucky you!
Regards.
Ram

Hi Stephanie,
impressing, very expressive character portrait, looking wild and lively through the tight framing and the well handled falloff in sharpness towards the beak and the back. Focus perfectly placed, exposure well handled. Well done!
Good notes, and another nice, well told joke. Thank you!
Best regards,
Peter

Hi Stphanie
Bon portrait avec de beau dtails et une belle mise au point de cette belle autruche.Tu as bien su capt son regard. Merci pour l'envoi et bonne journe.
Bravo et au revoir...JP

That's a tad up close and personal wouldn't you say?! It's a fun capture. Having the center so sharp with blur to either side seems to work. Thanks for sharing it and the laugh.

I truly love it....
Nice work...
Cecilia

Hey,hey Steph! I knew this one! Lol...

What a nice close-up of a so funny looking bird. I like this DOF with focus just on its eye; this is a real nice portrait! Did you know that it wasn't true that they put their head in the sand when they are afraid? I really wonder where this legend comes from :-) Thanks,
Claudine

Wonderful image. really is nice with great colours, sharpness.
Best wishes
Achim

Nice close up with good detail, but for this bird I am not sure it helps! ;) Well taken.

Greg

Dear Steph

I have decided to use my smileys and critique the postings of ostriches on the site. I am so intrigued by this interesting bird and it is always a pleasure for me to search information about and look at pictures of them.

By the way did you see the cute baby ostrich posting that Loot has posted and dedicated to all the females of Trek Nature?
Please do yourself a favour and visit Junior. It is just too adorable for words. I am sure you will love it.

I must just add that I am not a great critiquer but I admire a good photo and if it is accompanied by a good note or story it makes it more appreciated.

Because I am not a photographer myself I love to look at all the beautiful photos posted on Trek Nature and wish I have started photography years ago. Unfortunately I am too old now. I just admire the talented people who do not mind to share their photographic experiences and knowledge with uninformed people like myself.

As a pensioner I spent most of my day, browsing through Trek Nature. One actually does not need another site

Kind regards
Aaltjie
