Etoshas Elephants trek from the north.

This image was captured during our 2011 August/September holiday in the Etosha National Park. After the November/December/ January rains in Etosha the water quickly dries up in the arid desert terrain and the Elephants starts their trek up north for better grazing and water. August/September they again return to Etosha in wait for the better times, meaning the summer rains.
It is a well known fact that many Elephant calfs die if they cannot keep up with the trekking herd. This is the sacrifice a mother Elephant has to make to survive in the safety of the herd. While we were watching the herds return from the north at this specific water hole called Klein Okevi, it was very interesting to see one herd arrive, quench their thirst while the next herd waits in the background for the first herd to leave. This photo was taken with my Cannon EOS 20D as one calf caught up with its mother. The fact that this calf dashed into the water as he has never seen water before, triggered quite an emotional feeling in Annetjie and myself.
I hope you enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed taking it, . . . . . and I sincerely hope that you realise the hardships and sacrifices these animals have to endure to survive!!
Best regards,
Carl

Hallo Carl,
Very nice action photo of this Elephant mother with young. Excellent sharpness and beautiful natural colours. Good DOF. The tree in the background is the victim of elephants, maybe.

Hello Carl,
A wonderfully sharp image of a beautiful event of togetherness between parent and child. I believe the Etosha elephants have particularly small tusks due to a shortage of phosphate in the soil but they have a very large physique otherwise. I am a little perplexed here as I always was under the impression that the elephant move north from Etosha to Ovamboland and Angola during the rainy season. And I remember being told by the Chief Game Ranger at Namutoni that they did not know what the reason for the migration was but that one possibility was that the ground became too slippery for them during the rainy season and that they then moved on to the more sandy terrain to the north. I am not sure that they could have figured that out. One year in November (Etosha was still closed to visitors during the rainy season those years but we had bona fide friends in the park and got invites) I took a photo of a very large bull at a water hole near Namutoni and was told that he was one of the very last to depart for the north. However, that is just by the way.

Congratulations again on this excellent image and on your Etosha gallery. Best wishes and I am looking forward to the rest.

Great African stamps with these elephants enjoying the water, with the arid savannah pale background. Since part of my private collection of elephants. Thanks for sharing your work, Carl.
