Lucky Ring-necked Dove 2.

I want to post a real wildlife scene (which consists of five photographs) I witnessed at the Chudop water hole in Etosha National Park. Technically it is far from perfect but I think well worth sharing an experience in nature. It was taken at 07:50 AM from a distance of 98.3 meters across the waterhole and in fairly bad light conditions.

Number 1.
One morning I saw this Jackal circling the waterhole while literally hundreds of Ring-necked doves were drinking water. When he saw that a Dove is occupied quenching its thirst, he would stop, crouch and go for the prey. On occasions he was lucky and sometimes he came up short and that is why I call these five uploads Lucky Ring-necked Dove.

Number 2.
When the Dove noticed the Jackal, the jackal lunged forward towards its intended prey and the Dove took off, again before I could focus on him or the Dove.

Enjoy and comments are welcome.

Regards,

Carl

Hallo Carl,
Ondanks de ruis in de foto is dit toch een apart actie moment. Uitstekende timing.
Groet,
Peter

Hello Carl

AOUTCH ! as you wrote real wildlife scene ,
the action is very well seen with details on
both subjects, I see the photo was shot :
2012-12-16 with ISO400, and you was writting
only recently you start to go with higher ISOs,
On that situation you was the Dove took-off and
you missed the focus, I am asking myself if
with a higher ISO like ISO800 would give you
more light and speed to be faster in the focusing, TFS

Hello Carl,
I was wondering if I misunderstood you when you said you were going to post a series of shots. I checked your photos for a few days and didn't see any more images, but now I see you have started posting once again.
Even though the focus is a tad soft this type of action is still very interesting as well as educational. This is also something you rarely get a chance to view let alone photograph which makes it that much more eye appealing.
Ron
